The university textbook Concrete Structures was developed by consolidating teaching materials on the topic of concrete structures and finalizing the digital textbook that has been in use since 2016 in the course Load-Bearing Structures II at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb.
The book is primarily intended for architecture students, with the aim of introducing them to the fundamentals of concrete structures. Concrete structures are the most commonly used structural systems in building construction. Therefore, the objective is to familiarize architecture students with the properties of concrete as a material, the basics of structural design, the types of loads acting on concrete structures, calculation procedures, the behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete, serviceability limit states, and detailed design considerations.
The textbook is written in a somewhat simplified manner compared to standard concrete structure textbooks intended for civil engineering students. This approach has proven to be effective and well-received not only by students at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb but also by students at other faculties of architecture in the country and region, as well as some civil engineering students.
The intention was not to present complex mathematical derivations, but rather to explain the specific characteristics and logic of concrete structure design in a clear and accessible way, based on observation of structural behavior—while keeping in mind the inherent complexity of the design process. All formulations are derived through logical interpretation of structural behavior, in accordance with contemporary technical regulations and modern design methodologies for concrete structures.
